He first visited us wishing for cataract surgery with multifocal lenses, his main complaints being difficulty seeing from cortical cataracts and the inconvenience of hyperopia and presbyopia. He is a well-known product designer and wanted to choose a lens with quality of vision (QOV) first, regardless of coverage by advanced medical care, so at first we recommended MiniWELL Ready. However, he spends a lot of time on desk work and reading and also wanted to prioritize near reading vision, and he himself proposed the latest trifocal lens, AcrivaUD Trinova.
AcrivaUD Trinova is imported from the Netherlands, and there are still few cases in Japan, but it is stronger at near than MiniWELL, and adds an extended depth of focus function not found in previous trifocals. In addition, its structure seems to greatly reduce halos and glare, so we judged it a better match for his wishes than MiniWELL and adopted his proposal of AcrivaUD Trinova for the surgery.
As a result, from the day after surgery vision recovered quickly at both distances, and both eyes achieved very good uncorrected vision, 1.5 at distance and 1.0 at near. He ran a full marathon about ten days after surgery, which made me nervous, but there were no complications such as infection, and he was very satisfied that his performance at work and in his hobbies had improved. According to him there is almost no glare, and he feels slight halos only at night, not enough to cause any trouble. It is trifocal, but with the added extended depth of focus function, vision between the foci is smooth without dips, and my impression is that it can deliver better QOV than other trifocal lenses.
The figure below shows postoperative retroillumination photos. I apologize for the poor dilation, but can you see that, whereas the diffraction grating of Symfony on the left has sharp edges (grooves), AcrivaUD Trinova on the right has a gently curved structure? Making the diffractive edges a sinusoidal structure (curved structure) like this reduces halos and glare.

He also kindly provided a long personal account (memoir), wishing it to help people like him who are considering cataract surgery with AcrivaUD Trinova gather information. I take this opportunity to thank him.
